Lotus Cars – that other Brit sports car maker – has announced the commencement of track testing on it’s Evora 414E Range Extended Hybrid Electric Concept. Testing is taking place at the company’s RAF Hethel track in Norfolk.
Lotus says it’s devoloping the 414E Hybrid to showcase the company’s new developments in plug-in, range-extended electric propulsion, new electronic technologies to enhance driver involvement. We reckon just wow would have been a sufficient reason. Anyone who’s driven the Karts that Lotus turns out will recognise the potential for superfast, extra-sporty electric hybrid racing.
From the outside it looks like Lotus has been evolving, lightening and tightening vehicles since the Elise specifically for this latest batch of low to the ground, corner loving karts. In 414E, Lotus Engineering has developed a highly efficient, high performance drivetrain system consisting of twin motors each limited providing 155 kW of power and 500 Nm of torque to each wheel :: Read the full article »»»»

The folks behind the development of the SoloTrek/Springtail Exoskeleton Flying Vehicle have revealed plans to create the world’s first fuel-electric hybrid flying car. Michael Moshier and Robert Bulaga of Trek Aerospace are forming a new company to develop the hybrid Air Car, which will combine recent technological advances in materials and electronics with the kind of duct-fan technology that was used in the now-retired Springtail single person vertical take-off-and-landing (VTOL) vehicle.
Moshier and Bulaga are currently on the lookout for funding partners to help the multi-person transport project take off (sorry!) and a number of real world scenarios for its use have been suggested – from being useful for emergency services such as search and rescue, police patrol and medical support, to providing vital lifelines for those areas of the world where established transportation systems are lacking.
Given the probable cost of the first vehicles to roll off the production line, it’s more likely that thrill-seekers with bottomless bank accounts will be amongst the very first to power up the four fans and take to the skies :: Read the full Gizmag article »»»»

Porsche have pulled off the biggest surprise at the Geneva auto show, unveiling the 918 Spyder plug-in hybrid concept.
A plug-in hybrid that Porsche says is capable of lapping the “Nordschleife of Nürburgring in less than 7:30 minutes, faster than even the Porsche Carrera GT.” What’s more, Porsche says fuel economy should be somewhere around 78 miles per gallon. How does it do it? The 918 Spyder concept is powered by a 500-horsepower gasoline V-8 and electric motors on the front and rear axle (the two electric motors make a combined 160 kilowatts of power, or the equivalent of 218 horsepower). Total power output is 718 horsepower. Porsche is not saying whether the 918 Spyder concept will go into production, but don’t bet against it. The technology is just too promising, the styling too delectable. Read the full article »»»»
