Our favorite  billionaire, Richard Branson has opened the world’s first commercial spaceport in the New Mexico desert, the brand new home for his space adventure company Virgin Galactic.

The flamboyant British businessman, exuding his usual flair and cheesy grin, waves of blond hair flying, inaugurated the building by breaking a champagne bottle against the building, while rappelling down the side of it, hung 20 meters above the ground from the main terminal roof.

Spaceport America”, will serve “as the operating hub for Virgin Galactic and is expected to house up to two WhiteKnightTwos and five SpaceShipTwos, in addition to all of Virgin’s astronaut preparation facilities and mission control.

About 150 people are booked for lift-off on the first flights to orbit attended the opening event. Also attending were the head of Virgin Galactic, George Whitesides, commercial director Stephen Attenborough, and famed US astronaut – and second person to step on the moon – Buzz Aldrin. Branson said he hoped to launch a vessel into space within the next 12 months, which he said would kick off an era of commercial space travel. Read the rest of this entry »

The marriage of Nissan and Renault has seen the pair produce some pretty nifty crossover designs, this however has to take the cake. This combination, hybridization of two diametrically opposed design houses has worked out rather nicely, thank you very much. Nissan in it’s effort to stay ahead of the current dullness out there in the motoring world is building two Juke-R concept cars. The tiny pocket rockets will be kitted with an all-wheel-drive drive-train and a heart stopping 480 bhp 3.8-liter twin-turbo V6 engine, the same motor hiding inside the Nissan GT-R supercar, ouch. The cars are being built by RML for Nissan Technical Centre for Europe (NTC-E) with a view to testing the public’s reaction to a seriously sporty Juke. CONSIDER IT TESTED! Juke-R is all I want for Christmas thanks!

The ultra-compact footprint of Renault Twizy – length: 2.32 metres / width: 1.19 metres / height: 1.46 metres – is ideally suited to city motoring. It will go on sale in Europe at the end of 2011. Renault’s wizbang all-electric Twizy – single passenger, 2 seat electric vehicle – can be reserved online by would-be buyers in Europe for just €EU20, with the French car-maker opening the books for pre-orders of the cross-bred car/scooter ahead of its world debut in production form at the Barcelona motor show. The vehicle is priced to sell at €6990/$9335 to €8490/$A11,335. Renault describes potential punters as “will clearly appeal to busy, car owning city dwellers looking for a second vehicle, as well as to younger drivers interested in a safe way to gain experience in traffic thanks to the availability of a version that will not require a car driver’s licence” The Twizy is essentially a four wheel scooter, according to Renault though it’s even cheaper to run than a Vespa. “Twizy’s running costs – insurance, maintenance and energy – battery lease and electricity for recharging – are just as modest, working out at 15 percent lower than those of a three-wheeled scooterRead the full article »»»»
