BMW Son of a B_tch

Posted: April 8th, 2013 | Author: | Filed under: bmw, BMW, concept | Tags: | Comments Off on BMW Son of a B_tch

BMW X4If someone had said “how about an SUV/Sports Coupé crossover?” back in the mid 2000’s, they’d most likely been laughed out of the room. Apparently not, well at least they weren’t laughed of of BMW’s boardroom. Admitedly, the BMW X6 hasn’t taken auto-design by storm, indeed many look at the concept as TOO BOLD.

The concept first showed at the 2007 Frankfurt Auto Show, a production model of X6 officially came to life at the 2008 North American International Auto Show in Detroit and Montreal International Auto Show. While slightly longer and wider than the X5, it is significantly lower and seated initially only four.

BMW has stuck-by the rather radical and slightly unpopular SAC – Sports Activity Coupé – indeed they seem to be banking on the design, the 5 Series Gran Turismo F07 – the actual orig of the concept, continues to gain customer support. Perhaps not an instant, but heck it’s a design not seen before, and one that Audi seems happy to copy – via it’s Sportback concept – Mercedes via it’s behemoth of a ride, the CLS.

So it’s no surprise that after five years of honing an idea the auto-maker would conceive a son of X6 – WORLD, meet the X4 Concept :: Read the full article »»»»

Single Variant 2013 VW Beetle For Australia

Posted: March 22nd, 2013 | Author: | Filed under: Auto News, Volkswagen | Tags: , , , , | Comments Off on Single Variant 2013 VW Beetle For Australia

2013 VW BEETLEVolkswagen paints itself as decisive, a stalwart of German auto engineering, Das Auto. The 75 year old automaker is clearly ill, it’s getting all jittery in it’s old age, the Wolfsburg behemoth has  got a bug (again)

The Erwin Komenda/Ferdinand Porsche inspired vehicle that started it all, is back in Australia!

It’s hard to believe, but only 3 generations of beetle have been produced in seventy five years. Here in Australia, the original type 1 started local production in Melbourne in 1954, the new Beetle was launched locally in 2000 – first seen as a prototype in 1994 – and the last seen hot-hatch rolled onto Australian shores in 2009. This latest makeover made it’s debut at the 2012 Sydney Motor Show.

With the engine up front and driving the front wheels it’s got little in common with Porsche’s original boxter bug.  In Australia the old new Beetle sold 9000 units.

This third 3rd generation variant launched in Brisbane recently. Make no mistake, it’s an all-new model, it shares little if anything with its predecessor. The unmistakable beetle profile remains central to the design, but with a much less cutesy look. The 2013 Beetle has a neat modern twist. it almost looks mean, nasty mean :: Read the full article »»»»

Lamborghini’s Latest Loud Statement, Veneno

KittyKates midnight MaraudingI love a good relationship, they make the world a much better place, Orville and Wilbur Wright, Lamborghini and the Germans, Me and KittyKate. The first example gave us flight, the second showed us how to use that flight when earthbound and the latter is now over, we’re best of buds.

Last night I got a string of random sms ‘s from KittyKate: the first landed at a digit past midnight and said simply “WOOO HOO!” The second had a little more detail: “…just hit the freeway, 0-100kmh in under 4 seconds.” The third was inspiring: “I need you to get my websites working harder, I need $500,000 by Tuesday!”

A couple of hours later this tacky picture – above – arrived. My one word – B_TCH – response might have been harsh, but heck, tapping on a keyboard, or driving a Lamborghini, geez who has a better life.

Clearly my ears were now pricked, KittyKate had just taken a Lamborghini soft-top for a Saturday night drive on Sydney’s empty freeways.

Two hours of adrenalin charged bliss. Aided by a race car buddy, she’d manoeuvred paddles, skated effortlessly inches of the tarmac and taken in the awe inspiring sound that comes from that other great relationship, Italian passion coupled to German hold on a second lets get this properly right.

As well as good relationships, I LOVE a solid coincidence!: Lamborghini is just putting the final polish on what has to be it’s greatest achievement to date, the all-new Veneno :: Read the full article »»»»

Grilled Auto News - SAAB Australia Says SiornaraThe importer and distributor of Saab cars in Australia has been placed in administration owing roughly $2 million to its creditors. Saab Australia has six staff operating out of Port Melbourne and just 10 new cars for sale in Australia.

The administrator Ferrier Hodgson says a creditors meeting will be held by the end of this week. Partner Stuart McCallum says it was not unexpected as Saab’s Swedish parent company entered bankruptcy in December 2011.

“This is as a result of the bankruptcy of the Saab cars’ parent in Sweden, following the global financial crisis in 2008 and specifically the collapse of Lehman Brothers that led to a large shock in the global car industry including for Saab,” Mr McCallum said :: Read the full article »»»»

GM Holden Slows South Australian Production

Posted: September 29th, 2012 | Author: | Filed under: Auto Maker, Auto News, General Motors, Holden | Tags: , , , , , , , , | Comments Off on GM Holden Slows South Australian Production

GM Holden Slows ProductionAustralia’s General Motors Holden is shutting down assembly lines at its Elizabeth plant in Adelaide for short periods between now and Christmas. The company will impose what it’s calling Market Response Days to reduce production and rationalise costs in response to lower sales of it’s locally manufactured vehicles.

GM Holden’s corporate affairs manager Sean Poppitt said employees would be told to stay home during the shutdown. He said they could opt to take long service or holiday leave if they wanted more pay during the period. “Employees who aren’t required to work are on 60 per cent pay,” Mr Poppitt said. “We do understand that these kind of decisions, we don’t take them lightly and we do understand that there is an effect on our employees, so we’ve worked really closely with the unions to identify the best days and everyone’s been informed.”

Mr Poppitt said GM Holden needs to be flexible to deal with Australia’s fluctuating demand and pointed out that Australia is the most competitive marketplace in the world.  “I don’t think it’s any secret that it’s a very tough environment to be working in, sales probably aren’t where we’d love them to be, it’s really crucial that we’re able to take this kind of measures and implement Market Response Days.” He added that he  believed the majority of the workforce understood the company’s position

The companys Market Response Days represent less than 4 per cent of GM Holden’s total production for 2012 and are a common measure for aligning production with demand in a competitive marketplace. “It is crucial for the long-term health of Holden manufacturing that we are able to stay lean and respond to the market.” Mr Poppitt said.

When was the last time you put on lipstick?

If you answered - IN YOUR CAR - you’re not alone. According to UK insurance company Diamond 20 per cent of women apply makeup in the car.

It might seem harmless, in reality it's possibly be more deadly than chatting or texting on the phone. A recent study by the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute found touching up your lippy -  or heaven forbid, applying an entire face - can increase a driver’s crash risk by three times whereas talking on the phone upped the risk by just 1.3 times.

Volkswagen and creative agency DDB Tribal Group teamed up with YouTube beauty star Nikkie of Nikkie Tutorials for a shock-and-awe “Don’t makeup and drive” video that’s already gone viral, the video above is the straight ad, below is the advertisement with commentary :: Read the full article »»»»

Audi Q5 Midsize 4×4 Meets Sports Car! The Perfect Crossover?

Posted: September 8th, 2012 | Author: | Filed under: Audi, Auto News | Tags: , , , , | Comments Off on Audi Q5 Midsize 4×4 Meets Sports Car! The Perfect Crossover?

Audi Q5 3.2 FSI Prestige S Line QuattroI had the pleasure of test driving the Audi Q5 this week, a car that I’ve admired for a while now. Outwardly Q5 has a gorgeously balanced  look, interior wise it’s Audi upmarket all the way.

My car for the day was the 2012 3.2 Quattro, Audi Q5 Prestige, my biggest problem here is going to be finding the space to write ALL the graet points on this vehicle,  I can’t emphasize what a pleasure it truly was – with an aggressive exterior, a luxurious interior, a drivetrain that provides a brilliant driving experience, Q5 is a true sports utility vehicle.

The Q5 Prestige I tested was fitted with Audi’s S-line package, including five spoke 20 inch wheels and performance tyres. The super smooth 3.2Litre V6 motor and Audi’s Drive Select system. The Q5 is just about the best looking cross-over on the road today, the view from inside it’s cabin is equally as appealing :: Read the full article »»»»
