Then there was one….

Then there were two...As Holden talks of cutting costs, production and jobs, the once mighty motor-car makers CEO Mike Devereux has warned of more pain on the horizon for the company’s embattled workers, pay cuts and more job losses, saying the car maker must radically and quickly reduce costs to survive in Australia.

The company says it is facing unprecedented challenges and is now asking its workers to help it make significant savings to ensure its Australian operations remain globally competitive. Last week, a warning from executives about the company’s future triggered a surge in employees wanting a voluntary separation package.

Ford’s talk of factory closures have flared fears for the future of Australia’s automotive industry. Australia’s auto industry is in such disarray that terms like “everything’s on the table” are being bandied around. A high dollar, cheap overseas labour and a global market are putting pressure on Australia’s manufacturing sector, and the car industry represents the malaise like no other.

There was a time when Australia had five car companies successfully making and selling cars locally. But those days are long gone – there has been a slow and steady decline in the industry since the early 1980s. Nissan closed its doors in 1992, Mitsubishi followed in 2008, and now Ford has announced it will stop production in Australia in 2016. The remaining companies, Toyota and Holden, have cut hundreds of jobs in the past two years, both are intending the slashing to continue, with odds on even that neither will be making cars in Australia within 5 years :: Read the full article »»»»

Three wheel motoring has been around for a bunch of time, from the extreme Davis D-2 Divan, to the pedestrian Reliant Robin. The most successful incarnation to date has been in the guise of  scooters – like Piaggio’s MP3, and Peugeot’s clever HYbrid3 – agile, quick and just a little sexy, in an offbeat kinda way. Indeed, the very first motor-car was a 3 wheeler, the 1860s Benz Patent Motorwagen, still history isn’t ever a great reason to repeat something, unless of course you’ve come-up with something as nifty as this! Virgin Space Test Flight

Virgin megaboss Sir Richard Branson is überconfident his spaceflight company has moved a giant step closer to launching commercial flights into space, after a six-passenger spaceship fired its rocket engine in flight for the first time. The powered test flight over California’s Mojave Desert lasted 16 seconds and broke the sound barrier.

Virgin Galactic is selling rides aboard SpaceShipTwo for $193,000 per person and so far more than 500 people have put down deposits. Branson and his children plan to be the first non-test pilots to ride in the spacecraft this time next year. SpaceShipTwo is based on a three-person prototype called SpaceShipOne, which in October 2004 clinched the $9.6 million Ansari X Prize for the first privately funded human spaceflights :: Read the full article »»»»

Lamborghini’s Latest Loud Statement, Veneno

KittyKates midnight MaraudingI love a good relationship, they make the world a much better place, Orville and Wilbur Wright, Lamborghini and the Germans, Me and KittyKate. The first example gave us flight, the second showed us how to use that flight when earthbound and the latter is now over, we’re best of buds.

Last night I got a string of random sms ‘s from KittyKate: the first landed at a digit past midnight and said simply “WOOO HOO!” The second had a little more detail: “…just hit the freeway, 0-100kmh in under 4 seconds.” The third was inspiring: “I need you to get my websites working harder, I need $500,000 by Tuesday!”

A couple of hours later this tacky picture – above – arrived. My one word – B_TCH – response might have been harsh, but heck, tapping on a keyboard, or driving a Lamborghini, geez who has a better life.

Clearly my ears were now pricked, KittyKate had just taken a Lamborghini soft-top for a Saturday night drive on Sydney’s empty freeways.

Two hours of adrenalin charged bliss. Aided by a race car buddy, she’d manoeuvred paddles, skated effortlessly inches of the tarmac and taken in the awe inspiring sound that comes from that other great relationship, Italian passion coupled to German hold on a second lets get this properly right.

As well as good relationships, I LOVE a solid coincidence!: Lamborghini is just putting the final polish on what has to be it’s greatest achievement to date, the all-new Veneno :: Read the full article »»»»
