We’d like to talk about our 11th favorite British Auto maker, TVR, unfortunately they went bust a couple of years back, instead we’ll talk up our 9th favorite British Auto Maker, Trident. We love a swindle, the thought of duping the galaxy is a bit of a chuckle. Insofar as auto swindles go, Trident has to be one the the most amusing. The amount of press – and yes this counts – this autobuilder has recieved is outstanding. Trident, not to be confused with Trident Cars Ltd (UK) this is where we get confusing, Trident Cars Ltd was established in 1966, in 1978 Trident Cars Ltd ceased manufacture – but not existence – someplace in here TVR picked up the Trident, and it still shows. The 1999 – 2009 Trident Iceni is apparently a retrofitted TVR prototype – remember that styling – We’re unsure who scribed the design but think the current incarnation is owned and run by Broadley Performance Vehicles PLC, Eric Broadley in cooperation with PB Design presented the Trident prototype at the 1998 Birmingham Motor Show. In 1999, Eric Broadley founded Trident Sportcars Ltd, which constructed the next 11 prototypes of the Trident Iceni roadster between 1999-2001. In December 2002, the company name was changed to Broadley Performance Vehicles, and the car was renamed the Broadley 1-37, its production apparently started in 2004, though No Cars were produced?. Yes Yes, still no sign of the Trident Iceni in all these words!? It’s coming, truly . .

We know the car exists, Johnny Smith from Fifth Gear produced a video for the launch of Nokia’s N96 phone via a mini series of 96 second downloadable documentaries called Capsule N96, Smith’s documentary starred himeslf and the Trident Iceni.

June 2011, Gizmagand if they say it then it is so – announced that the Trident Iceni was about to be launched, immanently! ‘One of the most interesting supercars of recent years that has always bordered on the edge of vaporware, looks like finally becoming a reality. Fraught with on-again-off-again production arrangements, management-changes, restructuring, redesign and refinancing for almost a decade, the Trident Iceni is finally slated for launch at the UK’s Cholmondeley Pageant of Power on July 15. At the heart of the sleek Iceni is a modified 550 bhp, GM 6.6 liter, twin-turbo diesel V8 running bio-fuel, and according to previously released info, the Iceni will run to 230 mph, accelerate from 0-60 mph in under four seconds, and deliver 70 mpg at a constant 70 mph. It will also have 100,000 mile service intervals, and is expected to sell for around US$150,000. We’re not sure whether the latest incarnation of the Iceni (named after the original tribe that inhabited the Norfolk area where the car will be built, if indeed it doesn’t become extinct like the tribe it is named after) now has the type of backing that will see the long-term project reach a satisfactory conclusion, but our understanding is that numerous deposits have been taken from potential customers over the years, and automotive manufacturing stories don’t have a lot of happy endings. In the last known specification for the Iceni, it tipped the scales at just 1,480 kg, ran its power via an eight speed automatic transmission and produced its maximum torque of 1,286 Nm at just 1,800rpm. Perhaps even more interesting than the usual static displays we see when a vaporware product launches, the Iceni will be demonstrated on track regularly throughout the POP weekend.’

The 2011 Cholmondeley Pageant of Power runs July 15-17 July at Cholmondeley Castle, Malpas, Cheshire.

We’ve sent a request into Cholmondeley for any info they have on the performace of the vehicle on july 15th – at time of publish we haven’t recieved a reply –  We’ve also scoured the available pix from the pageant for Trident Iceni prancing round the track, naught!?  Something smells a little fishy on this one, we’ll keep digging . . .
